CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

I wanted to scream, but all I could manage was a weak gasp and a squeaking noise, as I felt the sharpness of a knife blade poke me in the back, just hard enough to let me know it was there.

“Oh, I don’t know. I’m thinking the only way you’ll learn anything is if I make sure this is violent and painful.”

My mind went blank. That threat, it hadn’t been aimed at me. It hadn’t even been the same voice. The new voice … it was Jonny.

I was shoved to the side. Stumbling, I slammed into a couple walking by before crashing onto the sidewalk. They both let out startled screams and then laughed, obviously hammered. One of them, the woman I believe, had a yard-long plastic cup filled with some green colored frozen drink, which she dumped on my head, which only caused her and the man she was with to laugh even harder as they shuffled away.

The slushy, alcoholic drink stung my eyes as I wiped it away. A tall man in a dark trench coat and a black sombrero was fighting with Jonny. He held a large hunting knife, the blade slightly curved, the neon lights reflecting off the angry serrated section. As the man attacked, Jonny grabbed at his wrists, attempting to keep the blade at bay. The man in the sombrero grunted, now using both hands to try to plunge the knife into Jonny’s chest.

Several people screamed at the sight of the two men struggling, but more than a few just walked right on by, not giving the fight a second glance.

“Walk away,” Jonny grunted.

“She’s coming with me,” the other man hissed—literally hissed. His face was masked in shadows under the wide brim of his sombrero, but the sound of his voice sent chills down my spine.

“I don’t think so.” Jonny’s face was red, his jaw twitching with effort.

I let out a scream when the man’s trench coat swished open and what looked to be a tail slithered out. Despite all the lights, it was hard to tell if it was green or black, maybe neither, but it was at least as thick as my arm and it had a sharp-tipped spike at the end. It wiggled a bit and I got the sense that it was preparing to strike.

From my spot on the sidewalk, I did the only thing I could think to do. I kicked out, connecting with the man’s ankle. He let out what was more screech than scream. Unfortunately, as he went off balance he fell forward, the extra weight being more than Jonny could hold at bay. Jonny tried to take a step backward, but the forward momentum of the attacker tripped him up and as they both fell back onto the sidewalk, Jonny lost his grip on the man’s wrists and the knife plunged into his chest.

I screamed, as did several others around us, though I’m not sure whether they were reacting to my own scream or if they’d finally taken notice of the fight.
